Portal is Free until Sep. 20th (2011)

If you have never played Portal, this is a must for people in our generation.  Like how Half-Life changed the way first person shooters told story-line, Portal is one of those rare games devoid of violence, but still packs a punch like a psychological thriller, while maintaining a G rating cute look and feel.

If you don't have Portal, you should get it free here now!  Here are some excuses I will not accept:

1) I don't have a computer... (Somehow you seemed to have seen this, so somehow you have a computer accessible to you.)

2) My computer isn't good enough to play games... (Well someone's computer is, this game is attached to an account you can use and download it at any computer, not only at your own.  At least you'll own it and be able to play it in the future when you aren't so technologically feeble.)

3) I have a mac...  (Steve Jobs seems to have quit his job, but before he did, he allowed OpenGL in Apple OS to be opened to other programs [Like Steam] so you're now able to play source games... You did well on this decision before you left Jobs... Hopefully Apple takes this hint and opens up new ways to make it a more stable platform for polygons.)   (Long story short, it works, Do it.)

4) I have a terminal illness.... (You especially need to download this, the knowledge rooted in this game might just be what you need to die happy.)

5) I play League of Legends (Is that game real, NOPE Chuck Testa)

If you've had enough and want to download this game now, click here!  Otherwise, check out to see whats Valve is thinking releasing their games for free...  These lucky kids get to go to Valve studios and learn Hammer from the Devs.

The idea is that video games are becoming more like educational tools, and now people are buying into the fact that physics and spacial reasoning and problem solving environments create more interested and engaged kids.

New Blog Writings

Since I'm at school and haven't been able to update as recently, New TF2 button should appear soon, and also Minecraft needs to be updated, lots to do now a days ;)

The public Minecraft server will be released when 1.8 comes out to facilitate new biomes and such, also at that time the server will be down for a bit as I set this up (after bukkit is updated)

There is a new Fnord Inc. Blog that will be for our members and admins, that blog is here: 4Fnord

IF you want access to the new blog ask me, and we'll surely get it going!

Admins away

Please contact me if any of the servers (fnord inc.) get funky...
I have started school again and may not be able to tend to them as well.
Apart from that, I'll be needing new admins as the public is about ready, once I get enough time to implement it.

Long needed update...

So it's been a few weeks the MC server hasn't been itself, mostly due to me not having the time nor patience to fix it... it still works better than vanilla and there are certain player exploits atm.  Do know that every time you use a command you shouldn't have it creates trees of errors on the console.
However now we have a new TF2 server, getting set up with the MC server, so you can join us for some FPS fun, search for Fnord Inc. on the serverlist...

Server is Re-Powered

As a test to see if things are ship shape, I'm hosting a TF2 server now.  You should be able to find it on the serverlist as Fnord Inc.

The minecraft server will have to wait a bit, there are some issues with the map i'm fixing, and there are many changes in the mods and infrastructure of bukkit that is making this a long and painful process...  However once it's done and updated, The server should be able to go public, and things should work marginally different.  Should be a good surprise, hopefully the TF2 server will hold you off long enough...

I'm out of power right now, server will be down until further notice.  May be MIA for a bit as well.

Steam Summer Sale (Free Game!)

So if you had Steam you would already know there is this Summer Deal going on with these tickets you can trade in for prizes... one of these prizes is a free game worth 5$ (on sale?)[Alien Breed 2] and you're able to get 5(6) free tickets right now.  Also Team Fortress2 is now Free to Play.

Each prize is 3 tickets to redeem, so that's two free prizes anyone new to steam is able to redeem.  Unless you're the type of person to reject free stuff, I think many people would like a free game(or few)... so how to get the tickets?

First: Get Steam (and an account).

2nd:  Put 10 steam items(games) on your wishlist.  Basically you find ten (expensive) game's store page, and there should be a button that says 'Wishlist'.  You push them...  Get 10 or more items on that list.

3rd:  Go to http://store.steampowered.com/summersale/prizebooth/ and look at the Daily Deals for your progress, and other ways to get tickets.  Every day will have a free way to get a ticket on the last place on the list.  You can go to previous days and still get those tickets too, then Redeem them for what you want and presto, profit!

This will be stuff like.. connect to Facebook, write on someone's wall, write a game recommendation (TF2 is free, say whatever), or playing some TF2 and joining 2Fort(or any level) and getting caught on fire (which is easy enough), and jumping in the water in the middle..., or joining a steam group.

Success: You now have a free game or few, be sure to read the prizes, not all of them are games, and most of them are DLC or special cosmetics for other games, there is only one free game, but the TF2 sunglasses can also benefit anyone since that game is now also free.

^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^
So that's how you do it, Free games, and many games on sale.  If you plan on buying the games this is how the sale works: There are three tiers of sale going on....

Third tier is every game that goes on sale from the summer sale.... they are on sale but it's the highest sale price.  Most games are locked in this price.

Second tier are the games on the front store page under Daily Deals[Featured Items]... Those games are significantly dropped in price for that day, and there are about 12 of them.

First tier sale items are the ones that are currently in the prizebooth, the ones that have the day's tickets available for them.  These games will have the best sale price, but might end up being indie games, unlike most of the second tier's first class games.

Also every day at 10AM is when they switch the daily deal (In California's timezone) in case you wanted to know how long you had, there is also a timer on the store page.

Happy Gaming~

Catch22 for you

Well as most of you know I was at E3 this last week on business.  I took many videos of interesting stuff, and also have a few interesting stories to tell... However while I am away, it seems that the MineCraft server 'Fnord' is down for one reason or another...  This will be back up when I return to my chamber.  I apologize for any lost time, but you know... shit happens... especially when you leave the fan spinning.

Well to pass the time, I've uploaded a few videos of the new E3 games and floor.  Hope you enjoy.

The KeenSWH Cornerstone

It's not everyday you come across a game/demo that has been sat on for years, and probably being the first one besides the maker(s) to play it.  Keen Software House has it's own in-house engine capable of things that most modern engines aren't able to pull off, however it's an interesting step backwards in the wake of the new and better technology coming out where you see the real magic.

It's the root of the project, the chunk of code that started a 6DoF revolution that now we know as Miner Wars.  But how did it all start....  Now you can see for yourself, in a demonstration of the first engine prototype that runs in OpenGL which is quite a step away from our current XNA/C# DirectX system.

Not really sure if it's officially named yet, but for the sake of nomenclature... I dub this VRage Miner.  VRage being the engine name, and Miner being the first implementation of what Marek Rosa foresaw as the bread and butter of his engine.  There are lingering feelings of Terminal Velocity and other old DOS games while I first played this, very colorful and retro nostalgia.

Feline Time

So I got a new kitty, she is about 10 months old, and loves to cuddle.  A family friend owned her previously,  but they are no longer able to keep her due to health issues beyond their control.  I have named her Entropy because she's very personable (most of the time) and gets into every cranny.  She hides all her poop in her litter box, and is pretty clean about things.  Overall a great companion, who needs a roommate when you have a cat to knead you.  (ow ow ow)

I also will name the 'pubic' MC server Entropy, when it ever gets initiated.  It's not a priority at the moment for me, so don't expect it anytime soon.  This is my second kitty, but I'd consider it my first one.  My first kitty I had when I was little, but I had it for no less than a month before I visited Mexico for summer vacation, only to come back to my room remodeled with all my possessions boxed and moved, and no kitty.  So that doesn't count... I had several girlfriends with cats, but thats always a different experience.

I've been a dog person most my life, and it's crazy how many differences there are between them.  I still love dogs, and I could argue that some points the dog's personality are more favorable, but each have their perks and are fascinating.  She seems to be very feisty and friendly, such a furball.

Wolves Can't Mine

Soo the new update is here I've been putting off doing  the update since Bukkit doesn't work instantly overnight, and the plugins have to be stable, but it's now about time...  I've updated the server, and we're just as lively as ever.  I'm thinking at this point, we have enough people to bump into someone at most times of the day. Not only that, there are new buildings and mods.  Come check out the Disco and the 6 new soundtracks!

There is also Spleef for when the right people are on, I must be on the server in order for that game to work. It's maad fun tho, join in the fun!:

Wrangler Bug TF2

Not sure exactly what caused this bug, but I seem to have switched to my wrangler at an odd time. Then I noticed that my laser was originating from everywhere BUT my sentry, so I stopped and started to record. I ran around a bit with my sentry still responding to the position I was pointing, but then I started to think...
Is the laser starting at one of the enemies sentries? Or Is it just deciding to be odd on me, and do other people see this as well... As I walked around the origin started to move on me. Eventually I switched weapons and it goes back to normal when I switch back to wrangler. Then with it normal, I walked to the enemy lines to see if I could see those sentry spots do my doom.

Speedy Servers

It's been an interesting few weeks for the server, there have been lack of map updates mostly because the map has been tinkered with and had to expand.  There were three instances where I had to set the map back, so if you lost anything, bummer.  There were map errors and logic errors and spawn errors and multiworld issues.  Not that I have multiworld, but the issues were there...

But I do proclaim the server and plugins are stable for once, CB556 seems to work fine for now on MC1.3_01.  So things are nice and smooth, and gameplay is all there, minor bugs.  And there is a new plugin addition, which will enable me to make music much easier and better quality.  There are other goodies available but I'm not disclosing those at the moment.

And for the best announcement that a serverhost can make, the upload to the server just increased by 500% so you'll be loading things faster than ever.  Enjoy fellow CraftMiners.

Here is a video of me tinkering with bugs in the music plugin: (Midibanks)

Hard Work's Night

Many things have passes since I last left entry, I have been away for some while, busy with all kinds of work.  I'm in a hundred year old house, with leaks in the ceiling.  When you think you've killed all the spiders, the next day you see just as many who've resurrected back from the walls.  The paint seems weak and pealing off of the ceiling, drooping as if it was melting.  The corners of the house are riddled with grime, no matter how clean you think you get it, you see the next day that it somehow seeped through your walls and floor and is here to stay.  Forget about insulation, thats a thing of the future... The morning sun heats the outdoors faster than your house can get with all that cold trapped inside it.  So you're bundled up like an Eskimo. The floor is riddled with iron burns, as if someone thought it was a good idea to put designs in the floor with triangular accents.  But the dryer is broken, so that is almost conceivable.

Despite the century old conditions, it's a fairly neat place, and it's good to be free.

Blogs without pictures suck...

Unlike many other blogs that will give you walls of text without one picture, I try to give you walls of pictures instead of the text. Not to say I'm not one to write walls of text because I have been known to, however It's not as fun without a little link, or picture or video or somethin'. Not to say that books without pictures can't be interesting, but it's not really my thing to read non-fiction either.

Let's Go driving!

Apparently I can upload longer than 15 min on youtube now, so here is a Test drive. The Source File to this video was 132GB. I compressed it down to 1 Gig or so and I'm noticing the loss in quality in the dark areas... also in the high movement areas are lost of fuzz.

I've got a whole in my Bukkit

Fnord feels whole again, now that Bukkit is version 0.0.1 we will be testing out the waters of this wave in a can.  Tin bukkit can I mean, what's in it?

First there is the mother of all plugins:

Permissions - This lets me control who does what, but it's useless alone.  But needless to say this is the first step in any Bukkit server (unless you're doing something crazy).

Then there is:
AntiBuild - To keep those who I didn't invite from ruining anything, at least with with their hands, creepers be creeping.
BorderGuard - To keep you from making the map rediculous.
iChat - This gives us great colors, and other cool functionality like group names.

Then finally, the cornerstone of all mods:
Essentials - This does everything else you would expect from the server and more, from /home to /mail there are a wide variety of commands and goodies that come with this plugin, for most users this means /spawn and /home.  But mail is a good feature too for all to use, saves on signs.

To the could with the sound!

Firstly I'd like to say that I hit 1000 hits yesterday, so I guess I need more content to put up.  I could really write more posts, but I've never been a writer.  So I'll try to get into it more...

I have started a SoundCloud account, so now you can dabble in my tunes, and present me feedback on how it scraped your eardrums.  I have only uploaded older tracks of mine, and early ones at that as a test, but I'll get into improving some of my more recent tracks and dropping them by.

Here is what I have uploaded as of now...

Why don't people play games?

I understand that some people don't like games, however when you break them down into groups it's quite obvious why...

@Those who can't play - If you are an epileptic or have quadriplegia then it's very understandable why you would never play video games, but if you are uncoordinated or just plain suck at thinking - perhaps organised movements are too much for you, or so you make it seem. These people may try to play but end up making mistakes after mistakes which discourage them from playing. Little do they know, thats just a regular learning curve, and if they kept at it they would probably get good.

@Those who fear competition - You might be the best player in the world, but start sweating at the hands when someone wants you to prove yourself. Perhaps you just don't try because the whole idea of the game is to see who's better, maybe you are worried some jerk is going to call you a noob. (they'll do that no matter what) These people usually break out of their shells when they're ready enough, and then nothing can tame the silent killer.

@Those who's beliefs conflict with games - If you're religious, then it's hard to say what exactly this is about, but some religions don't allow violent and sometimes 'alternative' lifestyle depictions. I remember when Doom came out, it had the devil and thats what made it cool. Some people don't think thats soo cool... (for the hoard?)

@Those who aren't interested - This usually falls into the 'old people' category who seem to have 'outgrown' their ideas of fun, and now have lifestyles that don't include such. This can be further broken down into other categories, but if any of these apply then chances are most of them apply.

Timeless Twilight

Many older shows like Lost in Space, which were believable when they first released because the common person didn't have the scientific knowledge to try to verify or justify the plot, became less believable as time progressed.  You wouldn't imagine how many people were genuinely worried for the Lost in Space crew just watching the show, and the all time concern over watching that show: "Why not just kill Dr.Smith?!" Which would ruin the whole dynamic of the show and it would become very boring after that, gotta love Dr.Smith. >:A

However it's downfall came when it was too ridiculous to keep going, and the 'monsters' they would use for one episode were saved and used later on a different planet in another episode, needless to say if you were to watch this today, it wouldn't nearly have the same impact on a kid than it did when it came out because the kid (Besides seeing something in black and white perhaps for the first time and wondering why) wouldn't believe the premise.  Where at the same time, it's competitor Star Trek, which involved more realistic settings, would still be more or less buyable by today's settings.  You'd just get the whole retro 50's blast to the past feel.  Why didn't the future look like they thought it would in the 50's, that space-age look was badass...

This is where shows like the Twilight Zone shine, because despite the setting being in the mindset of the yesteryear's production, it still holds the same impact watching it for the first time today than it would have watching it for the first time when it was released.  Making something that timeless is something I could only otherwise give credit to The Beatles for...  Here is one episode that I remember the best when I think twilight zone:

VanillaCraft

Well, Server was down for a bit due to unmodifications.  It seems that Hey0 will no longer be making releases, thus our fancy stuff is now out of the question.  In part this is a good thing because I noticed Hey0 (at least the newest release) was doing really funky stuff, and the server is quite running better without it.  You will notice the lack of commands immediately however, there is no /home nor /spawn command so you'll have to be careful and take precaution to not destroy spawn!  This makes me a little weary about newcomers at the moment since my moderation tools aren't in place, but things should be dandy for now.

This isn't to say that it's all bad, a new mod is on it's way that looks quite promising, however it would be nice if Notch just added a few things to the vanilla minecraft server that EVERY server should have the option of using.  For starters a ranking system, with colored names, mostly cosmetic. The ranks should give simple permissions like the ability to edit blocks, or the removal of usage to certain items (flint'n'steel/TnT) nothing too complex.  And to top it off, a whitelist and/or reservelist to help insure certain players access and to keep greifing at a low. I do admit having /home and /sethome for players was pretty nice, having the ranks(permission to edit) and whitelist is crucial for a good server, and many players would be good with just a vanilla server in that case.  Until that happens, I'll be awaiting Bukkit the new community mod that looks very promising.

In light of all this, I'm not setting the server back like I was going to previous, we'll see how fixed everything is.  It seems that there was a redstone randomizer that I was using that was causing heavy lag on the minecarts.  I have fixed this and they should run much better now.  I put a little music box in the disco to keep things real, and the bank is getting a huge update.  But some people my ask, why a bank?  Well this server was started during the alpha times, and there are many new blocks and such, so I'm assuming that those things will begin to render as the map grows, but for the region that we're currently using there will be no lapiz stone and such.  There is also no Nether in this server, so in order to get those special blocks that you wouldn't normally be able to get because of these setbacks, you must go to the bank.  Where else can you get sponge?!  Still want people to be creative...

I'm currently updating week 8's map, and perhaps I'll put every other week in a new perspective, since the players know where north is, this shouldn't be too confusing.  In celebration of the new items, I've tried to put cake in everyone's home!  Seeing the way things are going, perhaps in the future we'll make a new server map with all the new features, but while we're in beta, we'll try to patch our old map with the new stuff as much as possible to keep this map going as long as we can.  Happy Mining!

Minecraft Server "Fnord"

As many of you may know I have a MineCraft server up, it's updated atm with new map/backup and Hey0.  Since MineCraft is in beta, the server will need updating every time there is a client update, and I like to wait for a version of Hey0 mod until vanilla has settings for user-rights/protection. (above you see a picture of Me, observing Kenmore's spider trap, however I couldn't see the spider.)

Unfortunately, a portal to the nether has been built (Against my will) and the server will have to be reset.  It seems we have had some wiring issues and some sector problems as a result of this, I haven't had much time to look into it.  I noticed the disco stopped working at this time, and a few doors are now jammed open.  I will revert to a snapshot of week 7, so the server will have lost about half a week's worth of work.  I'm sorry for anyone who lost progress on this.  Player Franken200 has offered to help anyone build due to this roll-back.

I'm starting to rewrite the MineCraft page a bit to be a bit more organized and offer more help and information for those looking at the server.  I also am going over making an official server topic at minecraft.net, but I've got to finish the revisions to the blog page first.  I also have been working on other stuff this week, and that is indeed taking priority... So it might be a bit longer.  Expect Updates!

2011 Happy New Year!

When 2011 hit, I had exactly 111$ in my pocket...  I was playing Day of Defeat 1.3 with my friend Winklman and it was all around a good time.  There were even people playing Ricochet at that time... go figure.

Happy New Year to everyone I know, and I have a few stuff to update on my serves and work, so I'll start updating on what's holding me back or what's going up.
